Same Wall. Twice the Storage. Zero Shelves.

Same Wall. Twice the Storage. Zero Shelves.

A Calgary homeowner retired four decades of wooden shelving in a single afternoon. Here is what replaced it, and why they did not look back.

The wooden shelves had been there a long time. Long enough that nobody remembered who built them.

Long enough that the bottom shelf had developed a permanent lean, and the top shelf held things that had not been touched since the last time someone was tall enough to reach them without a step stool.

They were not falling down. That was about the best that could be said for them.

What Was Actually on Those Shelves

The inventory was a familiar one. Paint cans from three renovations ago. A garden hose coiled on the lowest shelf. Bags of hardware that had been sorted at some point and then un-sorted by subsequent projects. Loose cables. A box of light bulbs. A sanding disc that had been separated from its drill for so long it had achieved independence.

None of these things were junk. They were all real items that belonged in a garage. The problem was that they were stored in a way that made them nearly impossible to retrieve. Everything was in front of something else. Getting to the item at the back of the second shelf meant moving the item at the front of the second shelf, which meant finding somewhere to put it, which meant the floor, which meant the floor was now covered in things and the original item still was not in hand.

It was storage that worked against itself.

The Consultation

The homeowners booked a free Wally consultation with a clear goal: get the shelves off the wall, get the floor clear, and get the car back inside.

The Wally team came out, assessed the wall, checked the stud layout, and talked through what needed to be stored. The wooden shelves were coming down. A Wally grid was going up in their place, mounted directly to the studs, with twenty bins on a floating wall system that would hold everything the old shelves had been holding, and then some.

The layout was agreed on, the deposit was taken, and the install was booked.

Three Hours Later

The old shelves came down first. Then the plywood backing went up, the steel columns were secured to the studs, and the tote racks clicked into place. The whole install took just under three hours.

When the team left, the wall held twenty bins. Every bin was accessible without moving anything else. Every bin had a Smart QR sticker ready to link to the Wally app. The floor in front of the wall was completely clear for the first time in years.

The car came inside that night.

The Part You Cannot See in the Photo

The before-and-after photo tells most of the story. On the left, a wall working hard and losing. On the right, a wall that is completely in control.

But the more important change is invisible. The homeowners spent the first evening photographing each bin as they loaded it. The Wally app's AI identified the contents and tagged them automatically. Paint cans. Garden hose. Hardware sorted by type. Cables. Light bulbs. Everything that had been buried in the back of a shelf was now in the system, searchable by name, and pointing to an exact bin.

The next time someone needed the sanding disc, they did not move six things to find it. They searched the app and grabbed the right bin in under ten seconds.

The Payoff

The wooden shelves were not a bad idea. They were just a half solution. They gave everything a place to live. They did not give anyone a way to find it.

Same wall. Twice the storage. And a garage that finally has a memory.
